"I must govern the clock, Not be governed by it" - Golda Meir

A recent article by California industrial psychologist Karl Albrecht discussed the four unique stressors that make up an all-encompassing gamut of anxiety.  He postulated that these uniques stressors each have their own method for reduction/elimination.

Today I want to talk about two of the four and save the rest for tomorrow's podcast so that each of them is given adequate time.

TIME STRESS

Time stress is just that.  It is the omnipresent feeling that you do not have enough time to complete all the things you need to do.  You are hyper focused on time and its lack.

CAUSES

  • Inability to manage time
  • Inability to say no

METHODS OF ELIMINATING THE STRESSOR

  • Increase the ability to manage time
  • Become assertive in saying no

ANTICIPATORY STRESS

Anticipatory stressors focus on events that are happening in the future.  People suffering from anticipatory stress have increased worry about an event in the future.  Examples could be a work presentation in front of your coworkers, an upcoming test in school or possibly a review with your boss

CAUSES

  • Inability to stay grounded in the present
  • Lack of preparation

METHODS OF ELIMINATING THE STRESSOR

  • Visualization - Creating and replaying a positive mental movie with the desired outcome will engrain the necessary steps to achieving success.  Studies have shown the brain cannot tell the difference between an imagined scenario and the actual event.  If you continually visualize yourself creating a positive outcome it will become engrained in your psyche and in turn come to pass.
  • Meditation - Meditation helps you reconnect to this present moment.  It abates the tension related to the upcoming event.
  • Planning - One of the causes of anticipatory stress is the feeling of no control.  By planning and knowing about the event inside and out the dress is diminished because you know what you are doing.
