This week I am focusing on societal thoughts that may not particularly work in your favor.  Many times you acquiesce to the thoughts of others in order to not make waves.  Sometimes it is a conscious choice and other times it is presented as the only option.

For Instance, working forty hours a week (minimum) for a company is simply one option for a career.  Did you know that others exist.  Did you know that anyone can be self-employed.  There is that option and even the option of entrepreneurship.

In a different vein there is the option of of a vocation.  How many of these were discussed with you as you were growing up? If you are like me then the option presented was the only option: school, work, higher work and then retirement.

It was the safe logical path of everyone.  It is still lauded as the best option.  But it is't the best option and it certainly isn't the only option.  Did you ever wonder why college is stressed so importantly.  Don't get me wrong it can be beneficial for many people, but not all people.  Parents drill it into their kids that college is the only way to be successful.

Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Frank Lloyd Wright didn't think so.  If I am not mistaken Bill Gates is one of the wealthiest people in the world.  And while wealth is not the only trademark of success it does point to the understanding that college is not the only path to financial security.

I don't wish to downplay college but it needs to be said that it is not the only road to success and a career.

Then there is the option, yes option, of working for someone else.  Did you know that you had to work for someone for the rest of your life.  You don't.  Many entrepreneurs chose and choose their own paths.  They invent, they write, they paint and more recently make limitless amounts of money creating businesses online.  I did say limitless, and it is doing something they love.  They have found something they are passionate about and made a business around it.

The traditional path of school and work are not the only options for a successful life, They are simply alternatives.  The way you here it from most everyone is that your life will not turn out the way you want it to if you don't follow that path.  The heck with that.  Follow your own path.
